Designed for Coastal Living

The original house on Short Street was demolished.

In its place, the owners rebuilt with a clear intention — to create a home that felt open, light, and connected to the beach just minutes away.

Large openings.

Soft white interiors.

Natural airflow moving through the living spaces.

This wasn’t built as a statement project.

It was designed as their retirement home on the Southern Gold Coast — somewhere they could slow down and feel at ease long-term.

They weren’t chasing trends.

They were choosing materials they wouldn’t question five years from now.

The flooring had to feel warm underfoot.

Natural in the afternoon light.

Grounded without feeling heavy.

Something that would still feel right long after the excitement of moving in had passed.

Case Study: Short Street, Tugun

Project Snapshot

  • Location: Short Street, Tugun (Southern Gold Coast)

  • Area Covered: Full-house installation

  • Home Type: Owner-occupied coastal retirement home

  • Collection Used: Blackbutt Hybrid Plus

The Design Intention

With the home rebuilt from the ground up, cohesion mattered.

The owners didn’t want:

  • Cold tile

  • Segmented flooring

  • Harsh reflections from strong coastal daylight

They wanted continuity.

A surface that allowed the eye to move freely from living area to kitchen, through bedrooms and across levels.

The flooring wasn’t meant to dominate.

It was meant to settle the space.

Why Blackbutt Hybrid Plus

Blackbutt was selected because it suited the coastal atmosphere of Tugun.

Its natural Australian tone feels balanced.

Not overly yellow.

Not red.

Not washed out.

In the bright daylight common across Southern Gold Coast homes, the matte finish softens glare rather than amplifying it.

Across the full-house installation, the consistent plank format creates visual flow. The grain variation adds depth without noise.

We supplied the Blackbutt Hybrid Plus for this project and coordinated with the builder during construction to ensure alignment with the home’s design intent.

Subfloor levelling was completed during construction, providing a stable foundation before installation.

Simple preparation. Clean execution.

The Result

After installation, the owners described the home as feeling warmer — more “at home.”

The Blackbutt tone anchored the white interiors and timber features without overpowering them.

Walking through the space, nothing interrupts the eye.

There’s continuity.

There’s calm.

For a retirement home by the beach, that sense of ease matters.

Flooring doesn’t define a home on its own — but when it aligns with light and layout, it allows the space to feel complete.
